KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided full construction inspection services for this highway widening project. The project is located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey in the Townships of Raritan and Readington. This project took an existing two-lane roadway and widened it to a four-lane divided highway with two northbound and two southbound lanes. The intent of the project was to improve safety, efficiency, and capacity of this important north/south roadway in the western portion of the state. The project entailed roadway and bridge construction. The road portion of the project was approximately 2.3 miles long. Within this 2.3 miles there were:
- Two bridges: Route 31 over Conrail and Route 31 over the Southern Branch of the Raritan River.
- Three culverts: One culvert is considered a pedestrian underpass under Route 31 to allow access to the Raritan River from a summer camp located on the northbound side of Route 31; the other two culverts carry tributaries of the Southern Branch of the Raritan River.
- Three walls: One wall is a median wall separating the northbound and southbound roadways (which are at different elevations for a portion of the alignment); the second is a retaining wall for the pedestrian underpass; and the third is along the southbound roadway along a portion of the South Branch of the Raritan River.
