KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) is responsible for the design and construction of the Kean University’s East Campus Access Roadway and Bridge, also known as the East Campus Link. This ½-mile long access road will utilize public and private roads, an easement through Liberty Hall Museum and Union County Park property and land owned by Kean University on the east bank of the Elizabeth River. 

The bridge over the Elizabeth River, located within the Union County parkland, will be a pre-fabricated truss structure supported by reinforced concrete abutments. The abutments will be constructed such that the bridge will not hinder the passage of the 100-year flood. The approaches to the bridge will be 15-feet wide and will allow for the one-way passage of the University shuttle bus.  Electrically controlled access gates will be provide at each end to only allow transit of one shuttle bus at a time.

In addition, a one-acre parking lot will be constructed at the East Campus end of the link to supplement the existing lot located behind the main campus building.  KSE will be designing a “green” parking lot for the University. Alternatives for the parking lot surface, such as paving blocks, gravel or porous pavement, will be analyzed along with the use of solar lighting, irrigation of landscaping with recycled rainwater, storm water retention and ground water recharging in order to produce an environmentally acceptable solution to the parking lot installation.

KSE, as the prime design consultant for the project, will be responsible for the civil and structural engineering, topographic surveying, traffic signal design, wetlands delineation, environmental permitting, geotechnical engineering, coordination with regulatory agencies including Green Acres, NJDEP, SHPO, Union County Parks and Recreation and Union County Soil Conservation Bureau and construction management.
