PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As a prime consultant, KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided resident engineering services for the complete reconstruction of 10th Avenue from 206th to 218th Streets in upper Manhattan, and was responsible for the construction inspection of the 12”, 20” D.I.P and 36” steel water mains. The work also included new 45”x29” elliptical RCP sewer lines, catch basins, chute connection, and manholes. Other portions of the work included utility relocations, curb and sidewalk construction, sidewalk assessments, traffic and street lighting, milling of existing pavement, paving with concrete base and asphalt wearing course and landscaping. KSE was also responsible for quality control, general coordination, coordinating utility relocation and construction activities with other city agencies to minimize construction related inconveniences. Due to the presence of NYC Metro Transit elevated tracks, Transit Authority Buildings, the Sanitation Department, MTA bus depot, along 10th Avenue, working and coordinating with other city personnel was essential for the progress of the construction work.

KSE engineering staff successfully dealt with all anticipated and unforeseen issues that were encountered during a construction project. At the early stages of work an underground tunnel was discovered during the digging of test pits for trunk water main which was not shown on the Contract Documents. This presented an obstacle for the installation of the 36” butterfly valve chamber and the trunk main.  KSE’s staff, helped to redesign the water main configuration, and the relocation of the chambers. New lanes were chosen to minimize hardship on utilities as much as possible.

KSE’s staff reviewed the plans curb profile elevations and checked every sidewalk quadrant after its construction to verify proper drainage and pedestrian ramp pitch. Where necessary we helped with redesign of portions of curb profiles to ensure good drainage.

In recognition of our work on this project,  KSE received the 2009 Gold Award for Engineering Excellence from ACEC NY and the 2009 Distinguished Award for Engineering Excellence from ACEC NJ
