KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided complete traffic engineering, traffic signal design, roadway lighting design, electrical coordination, and construction document preparation services for improvements associated with the widening of Route 9W in Bergen County, New Jersey. KSE’s services focused on modernizing intersection operations, improving roadway illumination, enhancing traffic safety, and supporting the broader roadway widening program through coordinated signal, lighting, and electrical infrastructure design. The firm evaluated existing traffic conditions, reviewed intersection geometry, assessed roadway operations, and developed design solutions that addressed increased capacity, updated roadway alignments, pedestrian needs, driver visibility, and compliance with applicable New Jersey Department of Transportation criteria, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices requirements, electrical codes, and project-specific standards.
As part of the traffic engineering scope, KSE performed traffic analyses for existing intersections within the project limits to establish baseline operating conditions and identify required improvements. The analyses considered vehicular movements, intersection capacity, traffic control operations, turning movements, lane configurations, safety considerations, and the impacts of the proposed Route 9W widening. Based on these evaluations, KSE redesigned five intersections to accommodate revised roadway geometry, improved lane assignments, enhanced traffic progression, and safer pedestrian and vehicular movements. The intersection designs were coordinated with roadway widening plans, curb lines, sidewalks, drainage features, utilities, signing, pavement markings, and construction staging requirements.
KSE also completed the full redesign of traffic signal systems at all five intersections, including signal phasing, timing concepts, pole and mast arm layouts, signal head placement, pedestrian signal provisions, vehicle detection, controller cabinet locations, conduit routing, pull boxes, electrical service connections, and interconnection requirements. In addition, KSE designed new intersection signalization at one previously unsignalized location to improve traffic control, access management, and corridor safety. The signal designs were developed to integrate with the reconstructed roadway environment and to provide reliable, maintainable, and code-compliant traffic control infrastructure.
For the roadway lighting component, KSE investigated existing electrical facilities, lighting infrastructure, service points, conduit systems, utility connections, and field conditions affecting the design. The firm then prepared a complete roadway lighting redesign to provide appropriate illumination levels, improve nighttime visibility, support pedestrian and driver safety, and coordinate with the widened roadway configuration. Lighting designs addressed pole placement, luminaire selection, photometric performance, electrical load requirements, circuiting, conduit runs, foundations, and coordination with adjacent utilities and traffic signal equipment. Through integrated traffic signal and lighting design services, KSE supported the delivery of a safer, more efficient, and better illuminated Route 9W corridor.
