Project Description

KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided a comprehensive bridge inspection team responsible for performing detailed structural inspections, condition assessments, and documentation of critical bridge components on a major suspension bridge crossing. KSE’s scope included hands-on inspection of the main span truss system, evaluation of structural steel members, assessment of bridge drainage and deck systems, and inspection of roadway appurtenances and support structures. The firm conducted field investigations, documented observed conditions, prepared inspection records, and coordinated access requirements to ensure a complete and accurate evaluation of structural components while maintaining public safety and minimizing impacts to traffic operations. Inspection activities were performed in accordance with applicable bridge inspection standards and agency requirements for structural condition assessment and maintenance planning.

KSE was responsible for the inspection of the main span trusses, specifically truss panels 24 through 30, including detailed examination of eyebars, vertical members, diagonal members, struts, portal bracing systems, and associated structural connections. These elements represented critical load-carrying components within the bridge superstructure and required close visual inspection to identify signs of deterioration, corrosion, section loss, deformation, fatigue-related distress, loose or damaged connections, coating failures, and other conditions affecting structural performance. To obtain direct access to these members, inspectors utilized free-climbing techniques, allowing hands-on examination of structural components located within the main span truss system. This approach enabled the inspection team to evaluate areas that could not be adequately assessed through remote observation methods.
On the Manhattan and Queens approach structures, KSE inspected upper-level superstructure components including floorbeams, stringers, subfloorbeams, deck-supporting structural elements, lighting systems, signage support structures, roadway deck surfaces, scuppers, drainage infrastructure, and overhead sign structures. Inspections focused on identifying structural deficiencies, drainage issues, corrosion, deterioration, connection concerns, and maintenance needs that could affect operational reliability or long-term serviceability. Access to these approach components was achieved through the use of bucket trucks during nighttime operations, allowing inspectors to safely reach elevated structural elements while minimizing disruption to traffic.

The inspection program required extensive maintenance and protection of traffic measures, including lane closures, traffic control operations, and coordination with transportation agencies and contractors. Because inspection activities occurred concurrently with ongoing construction projects in the corridor, KSE worked closely with project stakeholders to coordinate schedules, access requirements, and work zones to ensure safe and efficient execution of inspection activities. Through its detailed field investigations, hands-on assessments, and comprehensive documentation efforts, KSE provided valuable condition information to support maintenance planning, structural evaluation, asset management decisions, and the continued safe operation of this critical transportation infrastructure asset.
