Project Description

KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) was retained by the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) to provide quality total design and construction support services to ensure safety, in relation to structural integrity and repair, for the Rehabilitation of the Pelham Bay Park Equestrian Bridge over Amtrak-CSX in the Borough of the Bronx.

The Pelham Bay Park Equestrian Bridge was constructed in 1908 and is part of the Pelham Bay Park Equestrian Trail System. The Bridge crosses over the Amtrak‐CSX rail line and provides one of only two linkages between the Pelham Golf Course and Split Rock sides of the park for pedestrians as well as equestrians. The Bridge is under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYCDPR).

The project goals and objectives are to deliver a quality, optimized design product that will provide a safe, aesthetically pleasing bridge structure in terms of its structural integrity and compatibility with the surrounding park environment.

KSE is developing the design criteria for the rehabilitation work. The following design alternatives will be considered:

  • Repairs only.
  • Superstructure Replacement (Using steel or prestressed concrete)
  • Full Bridge Replacement (Using steel or prestressed concrete)

In preparation for the design development, KSE has completed a Bridge Deck Evaluation Report and a Geotechnical Field Investigation and Foundation Recommendation Report. The data included in both reports will be valuable in aiding the development of appropriate design criteria for the bridge rehabilitation.
