The Manhattan Waterfront Greenway is a 32-mile route that circumnavigates the island of Manhattan and is intended to transform underutilized waterfront into public space for both recreational and commuting use. However, there is a major gap in East Harlem which is disconnected from the water by the Harlem River Drive and various bridges on- and off-ramps, leaving the community of East Harlem with few connections to the waterfront. The Manhattan Greenway– Harlem River Project addresses the gap between East 125th Street and East 132nd Street along the Harlem River and involves the necessary structural repairs and reconstruction of the bulkhead located from East 125th Street to West 145th Street and West 155th street to Swindler Cove to ensure the longevity of the Greenway. In addition, the project involves the design of a Waterfront Esplanade across seven acres along the Harlem River between East 125th and East 132nd Streets.
KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) has been retained to provide survey services to the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) in support of this project. KSE researched the data files of the previous survey and the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) database to determine the locations of existing geodetic control monuments in the project’s vicinity, and undertaken a field reconnaissance to recover and expand the existing geodetic network for the project.
GPS observations are being conducted to meet the specifications established by the Federal Geodetic Control Committee (FGCC) for First Order Class II, which sets the accuracy at 1:50,000 or better. Final horizontal positions will be calculated, checked, and adjusted.
Eight (8) Project Benchmarks will be established for each site. Final elevations will be calculated and adjusted in the North American Vertical Datum 1988 (NAVD 88).
