Project Description

KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) was retained to provide construction inspection and construction QA/QC activities on this MTA Bridges and Tunnels project.

The work on the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge (Cross Bay Bridge) includes installation of pier scour countermeasures at Piers 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 of the Main Bridge and Piers 3 and 4 of Ramp A; removal of underwater debris and abandonment of materials in the footprint of the proposed scour protection measures; removal and replacement of the timber fender system at the navigational channel and Piers 3 and 6 of the Main Bridge with a Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) System in the same footprint; removal and replacement of tripod fender dolphins at piers with FRP monopoles; removal and replacement of walkways to navigational lights; railings on the existing fender system; improved maintenance access on the new fender system; removal and replacement of navigational signage and lighting; and coordination with 3rd parties, including the US Coast Guard.

The work on the Marine Parkway Bridge includes removal and replacement of the existing timber fender system at the bridge Piers 11, 12/13, 14/15, and 16; removal and replacement of the timber facing at the concrete cells with FRP piles; upgrading of cells with bumpers mounted to sheet piling; installation of pin piles at concrete cells at bridge Piers 11, 12/13, 14/15, and 16; installation of a new cathodic protection system at cofferdams; removal and replacement of timber walkways and steel ladders from pier tops to timber walkways and signs; replacement of navigational lighting and signage; removal of obsolete structures, submarine chutes and miscellaneous steel at tower bases; and coordination with 3rd parties, including the US Coast Guard.

KSE developed and implemented an inspection and testing plan composed of acceptance checklists and identified hold points, based on the activities under the contract. The plan was submitted to the Engineer for review and approval.

KSE is also responsible for overseeing the implementation, inspection, and maintenance of all erosion and sediment control measures specified in the Design Documents and in the approved Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), and for ascertaining that remediation/repair measures are implemented.
