Project Description

KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) is providing REI services in connection with the Reconstruction of Pedestrian Bridges over the Belt Parkway, the 17th Avenue Bridge and the 27th Avenue Bridge, under Contract No. HBPK17KA.

The project consists of the total replacement of both existing bridges with new bridges that include steel frame, arches and reinforced concrete slab, replacement of the substructure (abutments) and arch superstructure with the intention to reflect the historic design, a new minimum clear width of 12’-0” and a vertical clearance of 15’- 6”, installation of new railings, fencing, lighting, traffic signals, drainage, and accessible ramps/stairways. Both structures will also meet the latest seismic code requirements and ADA compliance. The construction duration for the completion of both bridges is approximately 30 months and, due to roadway restrictions, some construction activities will be performed at night and during some weekends.

Project work includes demolition, new construction of deck joints bearings and abutments on piles for the main span; ADA ramps and stairs; architectural treatments of fences, railings, piers, and abutments. KSE performed an independent review of the contractor’s demolition procedure and MPT scheme

Work also includes installation of new light poles with conduits along the new bridge, and installation of new drainage structures and piping. For the traffic component of the project, new pavement markings are being installed on Belt Parkway service roads. Basic Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) is also being implemented during the duration of the project.
