Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) opened for air passenger traffic in 1973. Now, more than fifty years later, the terminal no longer meets the standards of a modern airport. This project provided for new taxilanes, hardstands, and remote overnight parking to support the new Terminal A building by abating and deconstructing the satellites and connectors of the existing terminal structure and installing new airfield pavement and associated utilities, signage, and infrastructure, as well as supporting future adaptive re-use of the existing Terminal A head house by restoring the building envelope and occupancy level of the existing head house structure to remain.
KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) was retained to provide civil design support services for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), including utility removals, for the design of the controlled deconstruction of the existing Terminal A’s satellites (A1, A2, and A3) and connectors to the head house, and associated airfield areas. KSE was also involved with the modification and reconnection of the existing sanitary service to the old terminal building extension as part of the interim reuse of the terminal building.
In addition to preparing design documents (Basis of Design, Plans, and Specifications) for the PANYNJ’s structured submission schedule (30%, 75%, 100%), KSE participated in Design Team and Client meetings to coordinate the design features and scope sharing with the Port Authority staff, undertake Value Engineering assessments, and make formal presentations of the design submissions to the agency’s stakeholders.
