KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided structural engineering services for the floor structure investigation for the Bronx Districts 7 and 8 Garages of the Department of Sanitation of New York (DSNY). The structure is an active, two-tiered garage located at 423 West 215th Street in upper Manhattan. The age of the building was unclear, but the first NYC DOB Certificate of Occupancy is dated 14 January 1941. The building underwent a complete rehabilitation in 1986, including the replacement of most concrete slabs and some steel beams. The DSNY sought in situ concrete, reinforcing steel, and structural steel testing services.
KSE provided an assessment of the condition of the slab and structural steel, which DSNY used to make planning decisions regarding the repair of the upper tier structure. This included concrete cores and the removal of sections of concrete over specified bars and slabs to check for corrosion.
KSE also performed nondestructive evaluation (NDE) surveys to assess the condition of the deck of the Bronx 7 Garage Floor Structure with respect to delamination. The results from the impact echo survey of the garage floor included condition assessment maps, percentages of slab areas in various states of delamination, and condition indices.
Deliverables for this project consisted of the following:
- Plan-view, contour maps of the floor condition with respect to the state of delamination.
- Percentages of delaminated areas.
