KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided Construction Inspection services for the LIRR-to-AirTrain Wayfinding Improvements Project at Jamaica Station for the MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), Department of Program Management (DPM) Project Management team during the construction of this project. KSE provided inspection services in both the fabrication and construction phases.
The scope of construction work on this project primarily consisted of the following:
- Demolition and removal of various existing signs within the AirTrain Jamaica Station Building on Sutphin Boulevard, on the western sidewalk, at the NYCT Subway, on the LIRR platforms and LIRR westerly bridge, on the Portal Mezzanine Bridge, and within the AirTrain Fare Zone.
- The wayfinding improvements include the fabrication and installation of new static signage with a standard developed for the multi-agency environment found at Jamaica Station.
- Installation of new digital/electronic signage for the AirTrain Terminal mezzanine and the Portal Mezzanine Bridge, the installation of the back-end infrastructure, including conduit and wiring for power, and installation of wireless communication connections.
- Installation of new light fixtures to enhance viewability of new/existing static signage, and various modifications of lighting installations.
- Construction of new partitions, finishes, and/or ceiling details, as indicated on the drawings (including selective demolition as required), to support the new signage and wayfinding installations.
The Inspector’s responsibilities included:
- Supervision of all field activities of LIRR Force Account and third-party contractors.
- Review/inspection of third-party contractor’s shop drawings to ensure compliance.
- Tracking and maintaining the status on the disposition of design/construction issues.
- Ensuring the execution of work in accordance with LIRR DPM procedures and guidelines.
- Ensuring that work is performed in accordance with LIRR, FRA, and OSHA safety practices.
