KS Engineers, PC (KSE) was retained by RS&H to carry out our geotechnical investigations at the Liberty International Airport – Terminal C to assess the condition of the existing concrete apron and for foundation design for the building extension.
KSE carried out geotechnical investigations during nighttime to impart minimal impact on the busy airport schedule. KSE’s geotechnical investigation involved obtaining 40 concrete pavement cores using a portable concrete rig. KSE also installed four deep borings to obtain soil/rock samples using a truck mounted rotary rig to aid foundation design for the proposed building extension.
KSE prepared two separate reports, one on the pavement cores and second one for the proposed building addition. The pavement core report enlisted all pavement core pictures and their measurements. KSE also evaluated the compressive strength of the cores using the rebound hammer. This information was useful to the design engineer to evaluate the condition of the existing concrete apron and decide to retain or replace the apron.
KSE produced a separate report for the proposed building addition. KSE installed four deep borings including obtaining rock cores from the select borings. KSE also carried out extensive laboratory testing on the select samples as per the designer’s request. This information will be utilized by United’s design engineer to evaluate the proper foundation type for the proposed structure(s).
