KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided comprehensive structural engineering design services for Contract 2 of the Newark Light Rail extension project, including the design of elevated, at-grade, and station-related structural elements required to extend and expand the Newark Light Rail system. KSE was responsible for all structural design activities associated with transitioning the alignment from the northern terminus of the tunnel constructed under Contract 1 to an at-grade light rail facility serving multiple new stations. The firm coordinated closely with the URS/PB Joint Venture, serving as the prime consultant, as well as project architects Fox & Fowle and Barton Myers, Wilson Ihrig for noise and vibration engineering, and LTK Engineering Services for traction power and substation design. This multidisciplinary coordination ensured that structural systems were fully integrated with architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical, operational, and transportation requirements throughout project development.
KSE’s design responsibilities supported the construction of five new stations and the structural infrastructure required for the light rail extension. The project extended the existing system northward from the tunnel portal near Raymond Boulevard and Center Street, providing new transit connections to key commercial, cultural, recreational, and transportation destinations throughout downtown Newark. Structural designs were developed to accommodate operational loading requirements, passenger circulation needs, constructability considerations, long-term durability, and applicable transportation design standards. KSE’s work contributed to the creation of a safe, efficient, and reliable transit facility capable of supporting anticipated ridership growth and future service demands.
The Newark Light Rail extension created a one-mile transit corridor linking Newark Penn Station and Newark Broad Street Station, two of NJ TRANSIT’s busiest transportation hubs. The new alignment served the downtown business district and included stations at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center/Center Street, Atlantic Street, Newark Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, Broad Street Station, and Washington Park. The project was expected to attract approximately 4,000 average weekday passenger trips during its first year of operation, with projected growth to approximately 7,000 daily trips within several years of service commencement.
Construction began in 2002, and the completed rail extension opened to the public in July 2006 at a total project cost of approximately $207 million. The new transit facility significantly enhanced regional mobility by providing convenient connections among six NJ TRANSIT commuter rail lines, AMTRAK service, PATH trains, NJ TRANSIT bus routes, major employment centers, entertainment venues, and cultural destinations throughout Newark. Through its structural engineering expertise and successful collaboration with the project team, KSE contributed to the delivery of a transformative transportation investment that improved accessibility, strengthened transit connectivity, and supported the ongoing revitalization of downtown Newark. KSE’s work was recognized with the 2007 ACEC New York Platinum Award and the 2007 ACEC New Jersey Distinguished Award for Engineering Excellence.
