Project Description

KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided comprehensive geotechnical engineering, foundation design, shop drawing review, and construction support services for the development of the Newark/New Jersey Devils Arena, a major sports and entertainment facility constructed as a cornerstone of Newark’s Downtown Core Redevelopment Program. KSE’s responsibilities encompassed the design of the entire foundation system for the arena complex, review of contractor and fabricator shop drawings, evaluation of foundation-related construction submittals, and technical support during construction to ensure compliance with design requirements and project specifications. The firm worked closely with the project team to address field conditions, review foundation construction activities, and provide engineering guidance throughout the implementation phase of the project. KSE’s services were critical to ensuring that the foundation systems performed as intended while supporting the demanding structural requirements associated with a large-span sports and entertainment venue.

The foundation design was developed to support the arena’s extensive structural loads while accounting for existing subsurface conditions at the site. KSE designed the foundation system utilizing spread footings bearing on improved in-situ soils. To achieve the required bearing capacity and settlement performance criteria, dynamic compaction techniques were incorporated into the project to improve the engineering properties of the existing soils. The ground improvement program enhanced soil density and load-bearing characteristics, allowing the use of shallow foundations rather than more costly deep foundation alternatives. KSE evaluated geotechnical considerations, foundation loading requirements, and anticipated structural demands to develop an efficient and cost-effective foundation solution that satisfied project performance objectives.

The arena was planned as the centerpiece of Newark’s broader Downtown Core Redevelopment initiative, which envisioned a vibrant mixed-use district incorporating retail establishments, hotels, office buildings, parking facilities, and complementary commercial development. The approximately 700,000-square-foot facility was designed as a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment venue with a seating capacity of approximately 18,000 spectators. With an estimated construction value of $310 million, the project represented a major public investment intended to stimulate economic development, attract visitors, and reinforce Newark’s role as a regional destination for sports, entertainment, and cultural events.

Because of the scale and complexity of the project, foundation performance was a critical component of overall facility success. KSE’s involvement extended beyond design to include ongoing construction-phase support, ensuring that foundation construction activities, materials, and installation methods were consistent with the design intent and project requirements. Through its integrated geotechnical and structural foundation engineering services, KSE contributed to the successful delivery of a landmark civic facility that enhanced Newark’s urban revitalization efforts, supported long-term economic growth, and provided a durable foundation system capable of supporting the arena’s operational and structural demands for decades to come.
