KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided emergency fracture-critical bridge inspection support for the Betsy Ross Bridge, furnishing an Assistant Team Leader to support field operations, inspection documentation, condition assessment, and preparation of the final inspection report. KSE’s services focused on the detailed evaluation of two truss lines, each consisting of approximately 50 primary truss members, with particular emphasis on identifying cracks, corrosion-related deterioration, section loss, and other defects that could affect structural capacity, fatigue resistance, or continued safe operation of the bridge. The assignment required immediate technical response, careful coordination of access and traffic control, and rigorous field documentation due to the fracture-critical nature of the structural elements and the operational importance of the crossing.

KSE inspected all truss members located above the bridge deck, including primary chords, diagonals, verticals, bracing members, gusset plates, connections, and other steel components within the accessible portions of the superstructure. Inspection activities included close visual examination of member surfaces, welded and bolted connections, areas susceptible to fatigue cracking, locations with pack rust, and regions where corrosion had resulted in measurable deterioration or loss of section. The inspection team evaluated visible distress indicators such as cracking, deformation, paint system failure, rust staining, delamination, perforation, connection distress, and localized deterioration at member interfaces. Conditions were documented through detailed notes, photographs, measurements, and engineering observations suitable for incorporation into the inspection report and for use in evaluating the need for corrective action.

Access to the truss members was achieved through coordinated left-lane and right-lane closures across the bridge and use of a 65-foot manlift to reach elevated steel elements safely and efficiently. KSE supported field operations by helping verify access coverage, maintain inspection consistency, and coordinate observations between inspection personnel working from the deck and aerial equipment. Because the work occurred on an active bridge, inspection activities required careful attention to worker safety, traffic staging, equipment positioning, and protection of the traveling public.

Following completion of field activities, KSE supported preparation of the inspection report documenting observed conditions, locations of defects, photographic records, and recommendations for repair, monitoring, or further evaluation where warranted. Through its emergency inspection support, fracture-critical experience, and disciplined field documentation, KSE helped provide the bridge owner with timely, technically reliable information regarding the condition of critical truss members and supported informed decision-making related to public safety, structural integrity, maintenance prioritization, and continued operation of the Betsy Ross Bridge.
