KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided construction management support and construction inspection services for one of the largest highway capacity expansion programs undertaken by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. KSE’s responsibilities included inspection, documentation, quality assurance, and coordination of a broad range of roadway, bridge, drainage, electrical, and structural construction activities. Field personnel monitored contractor operations, verified compliance with contract plans and specifications, documented quantities, observed testing procedures, and ensured that materials and workmanship met project requirements. Inspection services encompassed excavation and embankment construction, drainage system installation, highway lighting and electrical systems, guiderail installation, roadway signage, overhead sign structures, subbase placement, milling operations, hot mix asphalt paving, bridge demolition, and the construction of new transportation infrastructure. KSE also inspected complex structural work involving excavation support systems, pile foundations, drilled caissons, substructures, superstructures, formwork, falsework, reinforcing steel placement, concrete placement, structural steel erection, bridge deck paving, parapet construction, and bridge-related electrical installations.
The project involved the widening of the existing six-lane New Jersey Turnpike between the vicinity of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Turnpike Extension, commonly known as Interchange 6, and the southern terminus of the existing ten-lane dual-dual roadway configuration near Interchange 8A. As part of the overall program, the outer roadways of the existing dual-dual roadway segment between Interchanges 8A and 9 were also widened by one additional lane in each direction to improve traffic capacity and operational efficiency. The program extended from approximately Milepost 48.7 to Milepost 82.6, covering nearly 33.9 miles of the Turnpike corridor through eleven municipalities located within three counties in Central New Jersey.
In addition to mainline roadway widening, the program included major reconstruction and operational improvements at Interchanges 7, 7A, 8, and 8A. The extensive scope required careful coordination of roadway, bridge, utility, drainage, traffic, and structural construction activities while maintaining traffic operations on one of the busiest highway corridors in the region. The completed improvements added approximately 170 lane miles to the New Jersey Turnpike system, significantly increasing roadway capacity and improving regional mobility.
Through comprehensive inspection, quality control, and construction oversight services, KSE helped ensure that construction activities were executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements. The firm’s involvement supported successful delivery of a major transportation infrastructure investment that enhanced traffic operations, reduced congestion, improved safety, and increased long-term reliability for motorists and commercial vehicles traveling throughout the New Jersey Turnpike corridor.
