Project Description

KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided multidisciplinary engineering, landscape architecture, surveying, and documentation services in support of the development of a new Training, Recreation, and Education Center on an approximately three-acre site fronting Ludlow Street in Newark, New Jersey. The project involved the planning, design, and preparation of construction documents for a new 28,000-square-foot facility intended to serve as a modern community resource supporting educational programs, workforce development, recreational activities, and community engagement initiatives. KSE’s comprehensive scope of services included structural, civil, geotechnical, and traffic engineering; landscape architecture; surveying; and preparation of supporting technical documentation necessary for permitting, approvals, and construction implementation.

The site and civil engineering effort focused on transforming the existing property into a fully functional and accessible development while addressing grading, drainage, utility, and environmental requirements. KSE prepared site clearing and demolition plans, grading and stormwater management designs, drainage system layouts, site lighting plans, and comprehensive civil site plans. Soil erosion and sediment control measures were developed in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements to minimize environmental impacts during construction. Detailed construction specifications and engineering details were also prepared to support bidding, permitting, and construction activities. Traffic engineering considerations included site access, circulation, and parking layout to promote safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians throughout the facility.

The structural engineering design for the new building incorporated structural steel framing, reinforced concrete elements, masonry components, and timber systems as required by the architectural program and building performance objectives. KSE designed foundations for individual columns, load-bearing walls, and other structural elements, including below-grade portions of the facility where required to accommodate mechanical and utility infrastructure. The building envelope and structural framework were engineered to satisfy the requirements of the governing building codes and applicable design standards. Comprehensive structural analyses were performed to evaluate gravity, wind, seismic, and other applicable loading conditions, ensuring the facility achieved the required levels of strength, stability, durability, and occupant safety.

Landscape architecture design addressed several site-specific challenges, including visual screening from adjacent properties, establishment of a mature tree canopy, enhancement of seasonal color and aesthetics, mitigation of traffic-related noise impacts, and buffering of parking areas to improve the overall user experience. KSE’s surveying team utilized Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to establish project control and determine right-of-way limits based on City of Newark Commissioner Maps. Vertical control was established using City benchmarks and GPS observations, with elevations converted from NAVD 88 to NGVD 29 to comply with City of Newark standards. These coordinated services supported the successful development of a functional, sustainable, and community-focused facility.
