KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided professional structural engineering services to assess the retaining wall along the eastern side of Riverview Fiske Park in Jersey City, NJ. KSE staff conducted a hands-on inspection of the retaining wall along its entire length. Required safety procedures were employed to protect the inspection staff.
The Riverview Fiske Park in Jersey City, NJ was originally dedicated as “Riverview Park” in 1912. The two sections of wall measure approximately 1,000 LF. The retaining wall structure was constructed of reinforced concrete directly on top of the indigenous basalt typical to the Palisades.
Defects in the wall were located during the inspection, and approximate sizes of these defects were recorded. Upon completion of the inspection, an engineering assessment of the condition of the retaining wall was provided. An Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) was employed by KSE to produce photogrammetric mapping and ortho photos.
Typical deficiencies consisted of deteriorated finishes, spalls, horizontal and vertical cracks, exposed reinforcing steel (rebar), corroded wrought iron fence posts, anchors and bracing, and organic growth vegetation. The majority of deficiencies were connected to water infiltration issues resulting in severe corrosion of the wrought iron fence posts cast into the concrete wall and leading to cracking and spalled concrete. The level and size of noted deficiencies varied throughout. The report identified those deficiencies and provided recommended repairs with associated budget costs. Repairs were scheduled according to the recommended priority categories as noted, since many of the deficiencies were linked and resulted from a single source.
After completion of the assessment, KSE submitted existing condition drawings, with recommendations for repairs to damaged areas, signed and sealed by a Professional Engineer.
