KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) is providing Structural Engineering Forensic Services for the Roosevelt Elementary School located in the City of Philadelphia, PA. KSE is supporting USA Architects in providing engineering services for this project. The Main Bldg. was constructed in 1922 and the Gymnasium Addition was added in 1969.
The Roosevelt Elementary School project is undergoing major renovations to restore the building envelope and improve the interior enviornment and school yard to meet the developing needs of the school. The scope of work includes roof replacement, facade security and communication upgrades and site improvements.
This Structural Forensic SOW included investigation of steel relieving angles and lintels, pre-cast concrete panel anchorage, and inspection and evaluation of interior slab-on-grade concrete floor settlement. Failures in exterior masonry at the Gymnasium addition were evaluated and repair recommendations provided. Recommendations for necessary repairs and cost estimate were submitted to the School District of Philadelphia (SDP).
Masonry probes were completed at the exterior to expose structural steel. Location, anchorage, section loss and overall condition was evaluated. Interior, first floor slabs-on-grade were inspected to determine the cause of settlement. Concrete core samples were taken and slab openings created to inspect the subgrade materials and condition. Pipe trenches were uncovered to determine original connections to the floor slabs. These conditions were discovered following construction phase demolition. KSE evaluated existing conditions and created design documents for corrective measures.
