Under a Design-Build contract with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ), KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) assisted in the design of the Thermal Distribution System (TDS) of chilled water and high-temperature hot water serving the new Terminal 1, which is replacing Terminal A at Newark Airport.
KSE’s responsibilities included the design of the TDS’s alignment, profiles, and typical sections; the identification and evaluation of utility conflicts generated by the TDS alignment and profile; and the structural design of vaults tying the TDS alignment into the existing cold and hot water plant (CHRP) serving the airport. The work required accommodating very tight alignment shifts through restrictive structural elements of the airport’s roadway system. KSE also designed maintenance of traffic schemes to enable the construction of the TDS facilities while minimizing disruption to traffic circulation patterns at the existing terminal. In addition, KSE completed miscellaneous task order assignments for the design-build team addressing structural, civil, and maintenance of traffic issues related to the construction of the terminal improvements.
KSE also provided construction period services in the form of structural shop drawing reviews and prepared responses to requests for information, as well as field visits to the construction site. Throughout our participation on this project, KSE worked closely with the mechanical designer and subcontractor for the TDS, Parsons’s utility relocation and drainage designers, and the project’s general contractor to keep the project on schedule and within budget limits.
