KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) is providing REI services to the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) in connection with the Pedestrian Bridge at the East Midtown Greenway. The East Midtown Greenway Project will fill a major gap in the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway along the East River, while providing much-desired waterfront access and public open space resources for the communities of East Midtown and the public at large.
The pier structure will be founded on piles drilled into bedrock in the East River. The majority of the structure will be supported by 60”-diameter, steel reinforced piles at the northern terminus point. Where the pier structure meets the Andrew Haswell Green structure, the piles will be reduced in size to 30”-diameter, steel reinforced piles. All piles will be rock socketed into bedrock and filled with rebar cages and concrete/grout.
The piles will support precast concrete pile caps, which will be installed on-site but fabricated off-site. Above the precast concrete pile caps, a precast tub girder system will be installed in order to support a landscaping and tree system which will be included in the “topside” construction.
On the topside, a bike path will be constructed on top of the tub girders. The tub girders will allow for soil installation to support the various landscaping and tree systems. A walkway path will run adjacent to the bike path and will feature various seating and railing options for pedestrians to enjoy the space. The esplanade will also include various light fixtures, irrigation systems, and watering stations (hoses and public water fountains).
At East 54th Street, a steel and concrete pedestrian bridge will be erected. This bridge will span from Sutton Place Park, over the FDR Drive, and onto a pile-supported structure at the esplanade. At Sutton Place Park, there will be various upland improvements to the park, as well as to the street and intersection, in order to provide safe access to the pedestrian bridge.
