KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided comprehensive surveying, mapping, and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) services in support of the transformational redevelopment of John F. Kennedy International Airport’s terminal complex in New York, New York. Serving as a critical member of the project team, KSE implemented an integrated geospatial data acquisition program utilizing conventional surveying methods, Global Navigation Satellite System technology, robotic total stations, and advanced 3D LiDAR scanning to capture highly accurate existing-condition information across one of the nation’s busiest transportation facilities. KSE performed detailed topographic surveys, developed high-resolution digital terrain models, and prepared coordinated base mapping to support engineering design, utility coordination, and construction planning. Survey efforts documented roadways, bridges, buildings, AirTrain guideways and stations, airfield infrastructure, pavement systems, drainage features, and numerous aboveground improvements. KSE also performed comprehensive SUE investigations to identify, verify, and map existing underground water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, electrical, telecommunications, fuel, and other utility systems. The resulting geospatial database provided engineers and designers with reliable existing-condition information that supported multidisciplinary coordination, clash detection, constructability evaluations, utility conflict avoidance, and informed design decisions. Working within an active international airport required meticulous planning, strict adherence to security protocols, and continuous coordination with airport operations. KSE personnel maintained Security Identification Display Area badges, Secure Worker Access Consortium certifications, Transportation Worker Identification Credentials, and all required access clearances, enabling field activities to proceed safely without disrupting airport operations. Through rigorous quality assurance procedures, innovative technologies, and precise data management, KSE delivered dependable geospatial information that reduced project risk, improved design efficiency, and supported successful project delivery.
The redevelopment program transformed one of the world’s premier international gateways through construction of modern passenger terminals and supporting transportation infrastructure designed to improve operational efficiency, passenger circulation, and long-term airport capacity. The work was performed within an exceptionally congested environment containing active roadways, transit systems, utility corridors, and continuously operating aviation facilities where accuracy and coordination were paramount. Maintaining uninterrupted airport operations while advancing complex construction activities demanded comprehensive existing-condition information and precise utility mapping. KSE’s surveying and SUE services established the technical foundation upon which the design and construction teams successfully planned, coordinated, and executed the redevelopment program.
