KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) was retained to provide civil and geotechnical engineering services for the design of a new three-story addition to a school at 2060 Lafayette Avenue in the Bronx. As an additional service and part of the construction phasing, the existing school had a new playground and ECC facility in an area currently occupied by a TCU. This was to aid in providing the student population with a new facility while their old facility was removed and rehabilitated during the New Building construction.
KSE prepared an Early Works Package that removed the TCU and installed new playground facilities. During this process, KSE discovered there were four separate storm and sanitary connections in the early package area that required close phasing coordination to refit the site to accommodate current NYCDEP regulations and the SCA’s desire not to perform any additional construction activities once the new ECC and play yard opened.
KSE was responsible for preparing the demolition, site, grading and drainage plans, and the utility, soil erosion and Sediment Control plans, specifications, and construction details. Our design also encompassed providing a Builders Pavement Plan that conforms with NYCDOT and BCC review processes.
KSE’s geotechnical services included a review of existing borings from the 1959 boring program and subsequent programs to establish a supplemental boring and groundwater monitoring programs to further analyze the soil characteristics and groundwater fluctuations that are unique to the site. KSE discovered a greatly fluctuating groundwater table due to the bedrock elevations. The monitoring wells installed helped us to provide recommendations for waterproofing the new building.
Lastly, KSE provided construction phase services, which included reviewing shop drawings, responding to Requests for Information (RFI’s), and preparing sketches.
