KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) was retained to provide civil engineering services associated with the accessibility upgrades at the NYCT 170th Street Station on the Jerome Avenue Line.
This Design-Build project provided improvements at the station to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These improvements included adding elevators to allow all passengers to utilize the station. Other improvements included additional stairs, architectural enhancements, State of Good Repair station rehabilitations, and improved lighting, telecommunications, and signing.
KSE provided utility and geotechnical engineering support for the construction of the elevators and stairs. KSE performed foundation design for shallow foundations and for micropiles to accommodate restricted work areas. This work included a review of existing boring information. Utility engineering was performed to relocate two 12” water distribution lines which conflicted with the proposed elevator and stair foundations. The utility relocations involved coordination with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) and the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) for relocations of fire hydrants. Extensive coordination with NYCDEP was required to minimize impacts to a pair of 48” cast iron pipes located near the proposed elevator foundation excavations. The work included ordering hydrant flow tests, existing utility removal plan development, and development of utility relocation plans, including sections showing the foundations relative to the existing and proposed utility lines and construction details.
KSE provided Design Services During Construction (DSDC) including responding to contractor Requests For Information and reviewing shop drawings.
