KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) was retained as a subconsultant to provide civil and geotechnical engineering services for the design of a new three-story 42,400 SF addition for a school located at 348 Deisius Street on Staten Island. As an additional service, the existing school was being refit and rearranged to better serve the student population, for which KSE prepared an Early Works Package.
Our design encompassed providing the Forestry Tree Package that preserved nearly every tree outside the property line, and a Builders Pavement Plan that met with NYCDOT and BS&A processes.
The project also involved aiding the SCA with information relating to the status of “in-use” streets, Bluebelt coordination, MS4 and SWPPP applications.
KSE was responsible for preparing the demolition, site, grading and drainage plans, and the utility, soil erosion and Sediment Control plans, including specifications, and construction details. KSE’s geotechnical services included a review of the existing borings form the 1929 boring program and subsequent programs to establish a supplemental program to further analyze site soil characteristics. KSE discovered a greatly fluctuating groundwater table, and a series of monitoring wells were installed to provide recommendations for waterproofing the building.
KSE is currently providing construction phase services, which include the review of shop drawings, and responding to Requests for Information (RFI’s), and preparing sketches as required.
This project presented some design challenges in that KSE had to develop innovative solutions to resolve issues connecting the proposed detention system and MS4 bioswales into the City Storm system, which was very shallow.
