Project Description

As prime consultant, KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided comprehensive Resident Engineering Inspection (REI) services for the New York City Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) for the Multi-Location Safety and Infrastructure Improvements Citywide project. KSE was responsible for resident engineering, construction inspection, quality assurance and quality control, contractor coordination, utility coordination, schedule monitoring, documentation, maintenance and protection of traffic oversight, review of field conditions, and verification that all work complied with contract documents, NYCDDC standards, and applicable City requirements. KSE also coordinated multiple active work crews across four boroughs while helping minimize disruptions to residents, businesses, pedestrians, motorists, transit users, and critical facilities, including Coney Island Hospital.

The $16 million project included safety, accessibility, roadway, sewer, water main, drainage, streetscape, and green infrastructure improvements at twelve locations citywide, including seven sites in Brooklyn, two in Queens, two in Manhattan, and one in the Bronx. Locations were selected based on traffic safety data, community input, and infrastructure renewal needs, with work organized by borough and Community Board area to address localized conditions and neighborhood priorities.

The project delivered a broad range of improvements designed to enhance mobility, safety, accessibility, and infrastructure resiliency for all users. Traffic safety improvements included curb extensions, neckdowns, raised medians, pedestrian refuges, raised crosswalks, high-visibility crosswalks, wayfinding signs, pedestrian ramps, street name signs, traffic signal work, and redesigned curb profiles to reduce ponding and improve drainage. Transit enhancements included construction of four new high-early-strength concrete bus pads to improve bus operations and pavement durability.

Major utility work included installation of 17 sewer manholes, 72 catch basins, more than 270 feet of 15-inch combined sewer, and 2,092 feet of 12-inch ductile iron basin connections. Water main improvements included 629 feet of 20-inch ductile iron water main, 2,461 feet of 12-inch ductile iron water main, and 429 feet of 8-inch ductile iron water main, along with fire hydrants, valves, wet connections, and related appurtenances. Additional work included roadway reconstruction and resurfacing, concrete base repairs, asphalt paving, granite curbs, granite planters, brick pavers, benches, street lighting, FDNY work, private utility coordination, telecommunication conduit support or relocation, tree mitigation, new street trees, landscaping, sodding, seeding, shrubs, perennials, and flowering bulbs.

Through careful coordination, field oversight, and proactive issue resolution, KSE helped deliver a complex, multi-borough infrastructure program that improved pedestrian safety, drainage, utility reliability, streetscape quality, and neighborhood resiliency.

The project’s engineering excellence, citywide impact, and successful delivery were recognized with the ACEC NY Platinum Award for Engineering Excellence.
