Project Description

KS Engineers, P.C. (KSE) provided comprehensive surveying, mapping, utility engineering, and engineering support services for the design of the new Terminal 1 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York. Supporting the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey through AECOM, KSE verified existing survey information and developed highly accurate topographic and utility mapping to establish a dependable foundation for engineering design. KSE supplemented existing mapping using conventional total station surveys, Global Positioning System technology, static terrestrial laser scanning, and mobile LiDAR to efficiently capture existing conditions while minimizing impacts to active airport operations. Utilizing a Leica Pegasus 2 Mobile Mapping System and Leica ScanStation P-20, KSE established georeferenced survey control and produced high-density point cloud data for the project corridor. Survey services included mapping of roadways, pavements, striping, sidewalks, curbs, buildings, walls, ramps, accessways, visible utility infrastructure, spot elevations, grade breaks, and one-foot contours. KSE also collected high-resolution digital imagery that was integrated with the three-dimensional point cloud to create true-color geospatial models for engineering analysis and visualization. Utility engineering services included compiling record information obtained from the Port Authority and utility owners, correlating underground infrastructure with aboveground utility features, verifying subsurface utility structures, documenting drainage systems, and obtaining pipe sizes and invert elevations for accessible gravity structures. Copies of utility record drawings were incorporated into the final deliverables, providing engineers with comprehensive existing-condition information for multidisciplinary coordination and design development. Through advanced geospatial technologies, rigorous quality assurance procedures, and close coordination with project stakeholders, KSE delivered accurate survey and utility data that reduced uncertainty, improved design efficiency, minimized field conflicts, and supported the successful planning of this major airport redevelopment initiative.

The project involved development of the new Terminal 1 at John F. Kennedy International Airport, one of the centerpiece facilities within the airport’s ongoing multibillion-dollar modernization program. Accurate documentation of existing conditions was essential because the work occurred within one of the nation’s busiest international airports, where uninterrupted operations, complex utility networks, and extensive transportation infrastructure demanded precise engineering information. By integrating conventional surveying with advanced mobile mapping, laser scanning, and utility engineering, KSE provided the comprehensive geospatial foundation necessary to support planning, preliminary engineering, utility coordination, and future construction activities while minimizing operational disruptions. KSE’s services enabled the design team to make informed engineering decisions, reduce project risk, improve constructability, and advance the successful redevelopment of a world-class international aviation gateway for decades.
